I only require the wireless network in order to remotely access the internet from my laptop. At the moment I have an ethernet cabled connection from my desktop to my DSL modem via a Linksys router. My laptop has a wireless network card but not my desktop.

You can set up a mixed WIFI and Ethernet network, so no you do not need a WIFI card for the desktop computer. You only need t configure your laptop for the linksys router to establish a wireless connection for the laptop. Now, doing so you need to establish security, so get this book as it will easily explain all this and you will find it very simple to configure:

Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking, by Mark Edward Soper.

This book is great. It has a ton of information, but is so easy to read and follow and has directions using the Linksys Router as the example in the book. I think so any way, maybe the D-Link, no it is Linksys. So, get the book and you wil be just fine and you will learn a lot.

As I said, the book is easy to read and follow yet has a lot of super information. You just can't go wrong with this book and it will tell you how to add other things to your network when you want to later on down the road.

I used it to set up my home and office networks and I have not had a lick of trouble. Great book and boy do I appreciate this guy for writting it.

on the other side get wireless capable router-modem (netgear or linksys or any one)
configure it with wirless mix mode..and it will work fine..

if ur desktop is plugged in directly to the access point (router) then you do not need a wireless card..

if your router does not have any spare network ports and the only way to access it is via wireless then you will need a wireless card. d-link has an access point that has 4 additional ethernet ports (network cable ports)

Well, if your linksys router also has wireless capabilities, you don't need the wireless card in the pc..

the least complicated concern to do is get a USB instantaneous adapter. you will no longer would desire to open up your pc in case you pass this course. in any different case, you like a instantaneous community Interface Card (NIC) that suits right into a PCI slot on your motherboard. they're certainly tremendously hassle-free to place in besides, yet once you're into ease of use and not establishing up your pc, pass with the USB instantaneous adapter.
