I have a 1988 Honda CRX with an engine swap to a D16 DOHC. I took it for an Illinois emission test and while it passed in part, it failed on the CO portion. Any suggections for correcting the problem?

Carbon Monoxide can be reduced by reducing the heat of combustion... i.e. make sure the proper spark plugs are installed or even consider changing to a cooler plug. Make sure the thermostat is the proper one also and consider changing it to a colder one too. Adding a super hot ignition system may contribute to the problem too but is a bit unlikely. The O2 sensor is the most likely problem with the CAT coming in second. (NGK has a terrific web site that can answer all sorts of questions... check it out:
http://www.ngk.com/faqmain.asp)

It is recommended that you replace the Oxygen sensor at 60,000 mile intervals as well even though the computer may not register a problem there. The catalytic converter should be taking out the CO so you might want to replace that if all else fails.

Me? I would do this:

1. Check proper spark plugs (NGK BCPR6E-11) or cooler after referring to the NGK web site.

2. Check proper thermostat (172 F)

3. Oxygen Sensor

4. Catalytic Converter

Does it have a catalytic? Make sure it has one and it is not hollow!! If it does then get a bottle of intake cleaner and spray it threw the throttle body while the engine is running you have to keep revving it up while you are spraying this use the whole can. I had the same problem it failed I came home and did that and went back and retested it and it passed!! Good luck!!!
