When you have any type of loss you gain experience and knowledge.
When I asked my best friend to help me move some stuff and she didn't I learned not to ask anyone for help ever again. That was an experience, but one where I learned not to trust people.

It's sometimes known as a Pyrrhic Victory, in which you sacrifice some to save the larger group... ie, like a sacrifice out in baseball...
Or, where you send in a squadron of aircraft which may get wiped out, in order to save a carrier battle group which consists of a whole lot of other military personnel..
