It just means that your body is getting ready for birth. It's normal. Congrats.

You are approx. 6 weeks from your due date. Anytime in the last 6 weeks you will begin to dilate and effacement will occur. Before this time, your cervix was "plugged" and tight to protect the baby from any foreign substances getting past your cervix(which is the top of the vagina, at the base of your uterus). The closer you get to delivery the more dilated or "open" your cervix will become. This is normal. You can stay at 1 to 3 cm for WEEKS. Watch for your mucus "plug" to come out in the last 4 weeks. You still have a long way to go from 1cm to 10cm which is fully dilated. And effacement will occur slowly as the cervix thins and gets soft.
It has nothing to do with the due date. Your conception date has not changed.

Being dilated has nothing to do with your due date. You can dilate at any time during your pregnancy, thats why some women have premature babies. It is fine that you are dilated and efaced you are 34 weeks,it doesn't mean you will have your baby anytime soon.I was dilated 3 cm and 100& efaced for 5 weeks before i gave birth. All that means is that your bady is preparing for labor, not today or tomorrow, well hopefully not.Don't be worried .

I'm kinda confused - are you thinking you might be dialating too soon and thinking your due date might be sooner? You can be dilated for a LONG time before you go into labor. (I wouldn't know what being dilated early was like since my babe was 1 week late after a scheduled induction - ha!) But anyway, due dates are ALWAYS wrong. I think I've read that only 5% of babies are born on their due date. :) I think from, what, 38 weeks you could plan on going into labor at any time. If your baby measures correctly, it sounds to me like everything is right on track. Congrats on the soon-to-be-baby!!!

Wait are you asking if it's off because you've dilated? When I was 32 weeks I was 2cm and when I was 36 I was 4 cm dilated. I delivered only three days before my due date. If you're 34 weeks and measuring such then you're on schedule. Hope that answers your question.

No...some women dilate and efface slowly and earlier then others. It could still take the next 6 weeks for you be ready to deliver. Besides, anywhere between 38-42 weeks is considered normal.

I was dialated 1 cm for more than three weeks before my first child was born. If your doc isn't worried, then I wouldn't be either.

not necessarily possibly just a lot of pressure on your cervix i was 36 weeks and 1 cm dilated until i was induced at 39 weeks although my baby was big but it just means your body is getting ready for birth

I have several kids, and several grands, and I've discovered that to know the due date, as in, POSITIVE, what the due date is? That's the day you are in Labor and Delivery and the baby is halfway out, otherwise, they just don't know.. it's all educated guess.. :)
Congratulations....
btw, ya sound like one of my grands down in FL..

nope, I have been dilated to 1since i was 26 weeks, full term is 37 weeks and 80% of women have their baby within 2 weeks of their due dates, sex and nipple stimulation, as well as drinking green tea can cause contractions that can cause changes in your cervix
