This was suggested on the radio this evening. National Lottery and executions rolled into one.
Problem: lots of people want capital punishment to be reintroduced for really serious crimes.
Problem of that: there will be miscarriages of justice.
Some say, that's life, that's justice, the loss of the occasional innocent life is a price worth paying for proper justice for those who really are guilty.
The idea: a referendum. One vote: are you for, or against, the reintroduction of capital punishment? But this is no secret ballot: your vote and your name are recorded.
IF the vote comes out in favour of capital punishment, then it passes into law, and the courts can have someone executed if they feel they should.
But at any time it might be proved that someone has been executed wrongly. So, if that happens, the names of all of those who voted in favour of capital punishment are put into a hat and one is chosen to be executed in retribution.
Price worth paying?

Nice question, Wild_eep! I heard that radio programme too - it was meant light-heartedly and I guess your question was too.
What amazes me (although after a few weeks on here I don't see why it should) was how many unthinking people didn't read your question and just rattled off their "hang 'em and flog 'em" rant. Morons!

the outcome of a referendum is not legally binding. About 3 countries a year are currently abolishing the death penalty for all or most crimes, It still exists in a large number of countries but is not always used. A death row case in America costs more and it is more expense to keep someone on there rather than just in prison for life. All of the facts need to be looked at. Capital Punishment is an outdated concept. The people who dispense lethal injections etc are killers themselves.

Better sentencing of criminals is definately an important consideration for us all. I believe that too many criminals are not being punished correctly, severly enough, and in accordance with the severity of the crime they committed. I do believe we should re-introduce the death penalty. However the dilemma lies in what would be constituted as a crime punishable by death. In todays fast moving society, science is abundant and rapidly evolving. The chances of wrongful execution are getting smaller each day. It is possible that mistakes will be made from time to time but lottery style retribution is not an option. However I think our country would become a safer and more pleasant place to live if we voted yes to Capital Punishment.

They should bring back capital punishment for crimes against children / elderly / police etc . But they should be a death row first for say 25 years then that gives the person time to protest & proove their innocence , with the technoligy of d.n.a and the new techniques they are developing they will be even less chance of them getting away with crimes anyway . it would also solve the vast growing problem of asylum seeker`s as nobody can seek asylum in a country that has the death penalty as capital punishment .

That is absolutely the most ridiculous thing I have heard in my entire life.
However, this is a prime example of whacko Liberal thought. It circumvents the entire legal process in exchange for a "heartfelt" feeling solution. BY voting for capital punishment, you are no more responsible for the possibility of a wrongful execution, than your voting for county sheriff is responsible for that elected official making a bad arrest, To go one step further,it's the same thing as saying that voting for law and order is making you responsible for crime, because without Laws, everything would be legal.
Sheesh.

No and this whole issue is so fraught with problems which is why it was abolished. How many miscarraiges of justice have we seen over the years? I believe in an eye for an eye etc but the doubt in some cases would make me feel very uneasy.
Good question, just wish I had the energy to say more..night.

People seem to think that death is the best punishment for the worst offenders - but it isn't! Death is far too good for some.
Life should mean life - and I do not mind paying taxes to fund such a punishment and generate a real deterent.

Ya I'll go for that. The chance of your name coming out of the hat, so to speak. would be pretty low. I assume that all the Nationalities names that frequent our shores would be included.
Hanging should never had been stopped. I'm sure that we would not have the crimes that we have today if it was still active.
