Yes if the enclosure is deep enough for it to dig into and hybernate. I had two that lived for a long time loose in my back yard. They would bury themselves in the winter and emerge again in the warm spring weather.

Box turtles, especially eastern box turtles fair well in the conditions of nothern and central california. I used to have a large collection of box turtles and would keep them outside yet despite the cold they would never hibernate. Perhaps it just wasnt as cold as I thought, or perhaps it was because they had an abundant supply of food throughout the winter months, mainly snails. Anyhow, the decision to allow your turtles to hibernate can be a good thing under the right conditions, however, if your turtles have been living indoors all their lives, right now might not be the best time to acclimate them to outside conditions, instead maybe hold off until spring and then start allowing them to live outside. If you have any other questions you may also want to check with kingsnake.com as this website is an excellent resource for reptile enthusiasts.

OK, lets get down to basics.

Outdoor box turle enclosures are fine as long as they either stay warm all year (a night or two of cool temps are OK if they have a snug, dry hiding place) OR a place to hibernate.

Southern Cal is usually OK (but awfully dry for most boxies), but Northern Cal is pretty wet and chilly.

Your enclusure should include a hide box that will keep it dry (and should have a thermostatically controlled heater for occasional cold snaps) as well as a place it can dig out a nice hibernation site.

Well, my dear, it depends on what you mean by cold. And the person who answered "put holes in the box". LOL A box turtle doesn't mean he is in a box, it is a breed of turtle. You can find all the information you need on turtles and other pets on the best pet message board in the USA and Beyond! You can discuss the temperatures and other things you may not have known about your boxies!

Ollie will be arising on his first wintry climate and that i'm a touch demanding for it. we stay in Southern Ontario so our winters are very equivalent to those in Northern Michigan (stay about 40 5 minutes faraway from Port Huron)... AKA very chilly and various snow! I truly have a mutt - he's a Boston x Beagle blend. Bostons are notoriously undesirable in severe climate yet Beagles have a tendency to honest properly so we will see how issues bypass. For in simple terms taking Maxie out for a potty destroy, get a jacket that you'll be able to truly fasten around the chest (fairly some canines get truly skittish over the pull-over varieties). there is not any damage in picking up the jacket to have in case you run into an exceedingly chilly day. because you're in Oklahoma i'd not difficulty about the boots. the major reason human beings use them right here in Canada is to guard puppy's paws from the salt that's used to soften snow on the sidewalks. in case you do not have too a lot salt on the roadways it shouldn't bee a lot of a topic. like you suggested you're in elementary words taking him out to apply the relax room so that's unlike you should eskimo kit him :)! And if it makes you sense any extra perfect my boss has a maltese who does in simple terms high quality in the -20 Celsius climate!
