k Mg(OH)2 --> MgO+H2O
balance all O... 2 on left, 2 on right.
they're balanced.
balance all H... 2 on left, 2 on right.
they're balanced.
balance all Mg... 1 on left, 1 on right.
they're balanced.
the equation is balanced.
Mg+AgNO3 --> Mg(NO3)+Ag
balance all Mg... 1 on left, 1 on right.
they're balanced.
balance all Ag... 1 on left, 1 on right.
they're balanced.
balance all NO3... 1 on left, 1 on right.
they're balanced.
both of these are already balanced. looks like your job is done.

the answer from 2 below that "the equations are already balanced" has failed to take account of the different charge on Mg and Ag...Mg is a 2+ cation (clear from the formula MgO) but Ag forms a 1+ cation.
So....first equation is balanced, second one needs to be
Mg + 2AgNO3 = Mg(NO3)2 + 2 Ag

You know,i failed my chemistry O level because of this sort of stuff,Even looking at it now brings a shudder.I know what the things are.I have a A level in maths.But those are meaningless to me.
Dont worry about them.Unless you want to become a chemist you will never ever need them,and rarely if you do.
I run a metal finishing company,and we never need to know this kind of stuff.I employ a chemist and he can do chem equations,but only at gunpoint

Cour ain't you clever! It was adding up and taking away in my day and that was hard enough for me. My teacher said
"I would never be any good all the time I had a hole in my ****"
Feels good to be in contact with a scientist, not joking I was always in a D class.
