Yes, and I explain that I "probably" can do this or that, but will not commit, life is dynamic and changes on a whim, due to job, emergencies, etc.

When my daughter was young and I was living with this idiot of an alcoholic, he would tell the kids that we were going to do something the next day. He was usually drunk by then though, so I had to do it with the kids myself. So I learned never to make any promises, but just to do the things on the day as a "surprise" just in case I changed my mind.

I used to before I found out about the 50% divorce rate in America.
After this I decided that the failure of the public to condemn the breaking of a promise like that more or less justifies anything I do with regards to breaking a promise.
When questioned by one of my parents I simply respond by informing them that I am merely following the example they set forth by virtue of their divorce.

I'll try not to do it too much if it bothers you.

If I make a promise, I intend to keep it. I've had broken promises made to me one too many times and I don't ever want to be the one to do that to someone else.

I refuse to say, "I promise you." Promises are made to be broken. If I say that I'll do something, I'll make an attempt to do it, but that's the best that I can do.

No, I do not make a promise unless I am sure I can keep it. And I make sure I do unless an emergency comes up.
