If you are a DYI, there is no avoiding it. You WILL make a mess doing this job, unless you have a suitable drain bucket AND a "dish" that extends the drain area of the container.

I just had to add a comment here, I have worked for my dad's garage for the past 12 years. He is 1 of only 2 people that build transmissions in our area and we build transmissions for a few of the dealers. He has been doing it for 35 years and the one thing that he will tell you will burn up your transmission is those backflushing machines. They can collapse the filter or dislodge the filter, either way it will starve your transmission of fluid and burn it up. Anyone that would tell you differently has no experience with rebuilding transmissions or is just wanting a way to pay for their high $$$$ piece of crap backflushing machine.

Do not change the fluid on your transmission unless you have been changing the fluid regularly since the vehicle was new or since the transmission was new! Otherwise if the transmission fluid has never been changed and you are going to change it say bye-bye to your transmission in a month because you are going to have to rebuild it!! The transmission grabs from the filing in the transmission fluid from the years of it wearing!! You will be sorry if you did it!! Good luck!!!

Can't be done without a mess. Like said before, prep before to reduce it, get a catch pan, some kitty litter and a big piece of cardboard under it before you start
But, it is fun to make a mess sometimes

Get a big oil pan and lay a bunch of newspaper down and use oil dry of kitty litter. A mess usually happens whenever a service happens

its a messy job, but sure to put a oil pan under the drain plug to catch all the oil. Cat Litter is the best thing for soaking up any oil that you may have spilled over on to your driveway or carport. and make sure you have a shop rag handy to wipe off any tools or your hands.
but no matter how you look at it, its a messy job to do yourself.

yep. the best way is to take it and have it backflushed. most oil change places do it now. you dont have to even mess with the filter. if that isnt an option then loosen the bolts on the pan leaving them still attached but sloping to one corner. place you bucket underneath and gently pry the cover down. once most of it has drained then take the pan off the rest of the way and change filter.

either have it done by a shop. or use the right drain pan and plenty of shop rags and floor cleaner.
