Because marketing the organization is how people find out that you're there and what goods or services you offer. Without marketing, your business can't prosper to its full potential. Depending on the size of the organization, you may not need a whole department, but you need marketing.

let's pretend you are a farmer and you want to sell pumpkins, but you have no idea how to sell them and you don't have time because you are busy farming your pumpkins. One day a friend comes up and says they will help you. Your friend takes a picture of your pumpkins and makes up posters with the picture on them, then places them throughout the town and post them on the net. Same thing in marketing but on a larger scale.

To get the companies products out to the public! If the customers don't know about a company's products, they're not going to buy them.
