we were frist called indians because Christpher columbus thought that he had sailed around the world to India.
personally i really do not care. but if someone must define me by my native blood i would prefer to be called by my tribal name
as "A Blackfoot" or by the native name that was given to me "
"Elkstar Standingtree" it is my understanding that most of the people that are on reservations would prefer to be called by their tribal name. Native Americans is a PC trem to make the government feel like it is actually doing something for them.
i think that the new trem that ic comming up is American Indian
and possibly Amerindian.

When Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, he actually thought he had reached India because that had been his true destination. Therefore, he named the native people Indians. However, I feel the term Native Americans more accurately describes the original inhabitants of North America.

I don't think I've used the term "Indians" in twenty years. Typically, I use the term, Native Americans. Also, there is a growing movement to use the term, "First Nations," such as "First Nations people."

My friends prefer to go by what tribe they are from, and none of them has ever taken it wrong if I say" my Indian friend".I'll have to ask if that's wrong if they don't know the person. But all are proud to be Indian.I'm sure it all depends on the tone and the way you say "INDIAN".I wouldn't want to on purpose piss them off, that's for sure. And the thing about "firewater" is true. But my friends are great, they're really in touch with nature, and if you ever have a chance to go to a "pow-wow" go.It's a beautiful experience.Hope that helps.God bless

They were called Indians by early explorers who thought they had reached India when they landed on these shores. The idea that the world was round had just caught on, but they didn't realize how big it was.

Native Americans. There is no real offense in the word Indian, however people have tainted it with predjudice.
