As the moon is circling the earth, it has the inertia of it's movement trying to send it off in a straight line into space. The gravity of the earth is what keeps it from doing so. The two forces are keeping it in orbit
If a very large object or force were to stop the moon from orbiting the earth, it could very well come crashing down on us. If that same force were to accelerate that orbit, it could easily whiz off into space. Both scenarios would be very bad for us.

Well because like the sun and the stars remains in the sky because it is billions upon billions of miles away and is not meant to fall but to hover up in orbit....

It's trying to. Gravity is pulling it toward the earth but it's momentum keeps carrying it past the Earth, It is in effect missing us. That's what being in orbit is.

Whose to say that someday it won't. For now I feel we are safe. The bigger threat comes from asteroids hurling in our general direction.
