i used to work for directv. (got a better job and quit)
There are some stupid people in the call centers, and there are some stup[id people that do the installations/service... this will be the same with whatever company you go with.
DIrectv has nfl sunday ticket until 2010 so if you like football this is one way to go.
Dtv has MLB extra innings
Dtv has NBA league pass
.... ESPN full court
XM satellite radio for music stations
Directv charges $70 for service call (if you need it)with a 90 day warranty (know from working there in technical support)
Dish charges $100 each time (neighbor had dish)
DTV offers warranty service for $5.99 per month for regular receivers, and $7.99 for advanced (HD, HD-DVR, DVR, TiVo) (regardless of how many you have 1 or 100)
don't know about dish, they probably have something similar
DTV currently supports TiVo but they have launched their R15 which will be taking the place of TiVo receivers at DTV
The DTV DVR with TiVo does not have the same functionality as a TiVo series 2 box has.
The DVR with TiVo cannot be purchased from directv anymore, and will be replaced with a R15 DVR instead of TiVo
The prices are about the same for each company on programming, but I thought that the packages were better at DTV due to programming being matched pretty well depending on what pachage you want.
see their packages at:

JUST A FYI if you didn't know, directv does offer packages for schools for free. give the information to your local school..

Direct TV has Tivo.
Dish Network has a much clearer menu.
Aside from this, they vary very minimally. Same channels more or less (Direct TV has a bit more variety- especially in sports), and I don't know how important High Definition is to you, but DTV has it.
I have had both services, so I can tell you that they both have problems with big winds.
Prices vary, so.. it's up to you and your personal tastes, needs, and priorities.
Personally, I'd just go with the cheapest one. That'll probably be Dish if you need only basic.
Whichever one it ends up being, I'm sure you'll be satisfied.
It's so much better than cable.
Good Luck sweetie.

I have never dealt with DISH NETWORK but I will NEVER deal with DIRECT TV again. When I had to cancel my account with them for reasons unrelated to service, the man who handled my request was extremely rude and insulting. He kept saying he'd cancel my account if I really wanted to waste money on cable and not have as good a service. When I said I wasn't interested in continuing the service, he just continued being rude.

It really depends on what you want to watch. Generally speaking, directv offers more channels. However, dish offers basic satellite tv at a lower price. Quality wise, they're comparable. So I would check the channel line-up of each to see if the channels you watch are on their different price levels. For me, I went with Dish because I only wanted basic cable channels at the lowest price point. But I don't get a few channels that my friends who have directv get. Makes sense since they pay more.
