i just caught the middle of predator 2. Im a little confused. Was the predator at first tring to help the cops. He didnt try killing them till they attacked him. Im just not sure because i didnt see the entire movie.

The predator was only hunting. So it would attack anything that showed itself to be able to defend itself.
So at first it saw people (the criminals) attacking others and showing that they had strength and that they were capable of defending themselves.
When the cops showed up with their weapons and showed the same thing, the predator started attacking them too.
When it found out that one female cop was pregnant, it stopped attacking her, because the child inside of her could not defend itself.
That's also why they let Danny Glover's character live at the end, because he beat one of their own and showed that he was a worthy hunter.
It never mattered who was a good or bad guy to the predator. It was all about hunting worthy prey.

It was there for the hunt, that was why it was a predator. It was hunting for the sport which was why when the dude got to close to what was going on they scared him off until he started defending himself, because then he became a target of the hunt. But if they couldn't put up a fight either for themselves or for what the hunter deemed their properties, (which was why it killed the hooker, because the aliens saw her as being the property that needed destroying) it wasn't worth the pursuit or the kill. It would be like chasing a two legged dog with a torch. What's the use?
