5 vials for the first time. If you are over the age of 35, or could possibly have other problems in your pregnancy, they will take more to run more tests.
The entire procedure should take just a few minutes. Sounds like a lot of blood, but it's not. I remember asking the lab person "don't you think I might need that?" The vials themselves are pretty small. And, the preliminary tests are needed.
If all is well, you won't need another blood test until you're 7th month, when you get a glucose. They'll take 2 vials then, and check your iron level again at that point too.

I believe it was either 4 or 5 vials. The whole thing took less than 2 minutes.

I had 5 the first time and 3 the second time. It's really fast. Don't worry about it!
Phlebotomists always have a difficult time finding my veins. One time I got poked 7 times!!! So, if I can handle it, anyone can.
