What all do I need in order to set up my own secure FTP site on a host server for free? How would I go about doing that? Please speak in terms of FTP-for-Dummies--although I'm not totally computer illiterate...LOL!!

PLEASE NOTE:

I'll be using a HOST server. I don't want people having any kind of access to my PC.

Also, I'll be using the FTP to RETRIEVE excessively large audio files from clients and I'm trying to provide them a free way to send me files. For right now, I have no need to share these files with others, but will once I start getting more business.

You don't need an FTP site to be able to let people download from it!
I put download able stuff into special folder on my host server and just send the full HTTP address and path in an email. When they click on it they get a download window and they are on their way.
Piece of cake.

depending on the platform of the host server.

do you own the server? If you are using your own computer and have linux you can get tons of free ftp server like proftpd.

but if you have a window server, there are a few you can use i believe one was warftp do a search for ftp daemons

if it is your own and you have windows.. you need to go to IIS from admin tools and make sure you turn ftp on.
