I'm glad you asked this question because it hasn't been discussed in an honest and open way in the US mainstream media.
-Who did it? Well, Osama has admitted to it serveral times, but then again he also denied it the week after the attacks. Some 'conspiracy theorists' believe that the Osama confession tapes are frauds... that it was an actor dressed up as Bin Ladin who has been confessing over the last few years.
But it is quite likely that it was Osama. After all, he did have motive to attack the US and he is indeed a religious fanatic. In his confession tapes he has claimed that he attack the US because of US foreign policy toward Israel and the Arab world. (A legitimate gripe, but an insane response to that gripe).
And yes, George Bush was full of crap he said they did it because 'they hate our freedoms.'
So that's the who and the why...
A point on conspiracy theories. My opinion is that conspiracy theorists have gone way too far. The basic mainstream conpriracy (the 'loose change' conpiracy) is that the US gov set up and detonated bombs in the twin towers and flew a fighter jet or missle into the pentagon, as well as a bunch of other speculative claims. To acctually believe the same Bush administration who couldn't even adequately manufacture evidence for Saddam's WMD somehow ochastrated the 9/11 attacks is well, to me, silly.
However, there are some facts of the official story that don't add up and there were some very odd and suspicous things that took place (Fighter planes not being scrambled immidiately as per SOP, policiticians who had been warned not to fly, unusually high numbers of airline stocks being sold shortly before the attacks, Isralies celebrating and filming the attacks on a NYC rooftop). It is quite possible that there were those other than al-qaeda who knew that something was going to happen but chose not to stop it or warn the American people. Essentially to let the attacks happen. This is where, if it's anywere, the conpiracy is.
There are a few groups that benefitted indirectly from 9/11 and thus, had motive to havelet it happen (the Bush administration,I srael, the military-industrial complex, the oil industry to name a few). Of course, there is no hard evidence of any of these groups having involvement or prior knowledge, I'm just throwing some ideas out there.
Anyway, my advice is not to take anyones word for it, but to keep an open mind and do your own research.

The terrorist group Al-Qaeda, which is headed by Osama bin Laden. However, if you want more information I'll suggest a couple of things from different perspectives:
1. The "Loose Change" video (search for it on google and you should find a link to it)
2. The popular mechanics site (or the March 2005 issue) titled "Debunking the 9/11 myth)
3. The "Loose Change" viewer's guide.
The sites for 2 and 3 are listed below.

The Bush administration had a lot to do with it. Check out the movie Loose Change, you can find it on Google video. Also read the book "Towers of Deception: The Media's Cover Up of the True 9/11 Story".

We have been thinking it was bin laden but i dont think thats true.
first we have to analise the situation. Dont you think that ofter the plain being in the air for almost two hour out of their route they couldnt have just stoped it from hidding the world trade center. I blame the goverment come on the second plain took about 16 minutes to hit the tower and they could not prevent it. BF i blame the goverment. by the way my cousin died in the secont tower. And i think she would be happy if we really figured out what really happen.

I strongly suggest you sign off and start both reading newspapers and listening to the radio and maybe even the news on TV. This sad event was very well covered for quite a long time. As far as why - religious fanaticism and general hatred of the west. It is a shame that you have to be reminded that when the planes hit we saw videos of our supposed arab friends dancing in the streets.

The pilots, in this case skyjackers, of planes.
They wanted to kill everyone in the building and the plane.
Why?
They were told to.
Why?
Because.
You can always ask these questions but it won't get you any closer to understanding why a person does something that on appearances seems foolish to you.

I maintain it was everybody on the plane who was too cowardly to try to take a box cutter away from somebody--why? because they were rich, lazy and weak--also too stupid to realize a few stitches is preferable to mass death
