I was just like you until recently.
Then I started to learn ... Life is not a competition. The measure of your self-worth is not how you compare to someone else, or how many people admire or "choose" you. In fact, these comparison and admiration games are often a result of insecurity. You need external approval to validate yourself.
But the truth is so much more freeing. You are a wonderful person, win or lose, shine or shadows. The best thing to work toward is to develop yourself into a whole person. One with enough self-esteem to not need to be approved by others.

What are you being so competitive about? What are the problems with the people you hang with? Why do you want to be the starlight? Ask your self those questions.

it may help to remember there is always going to be someone prettier, faster, smarter, funnier, etc... than you. it can't be helped. get comfortable and secure with who you are. read some self-help books on self-esteem. some competitive felings are not only normal, but also healthy. they are what get us ahead and inspire us to reach for higher goals. but again, there always will be someone, somewhere, who is a better dancer or better writer or better whatever. let them be who they are. find what you are best at and be who YOU are.

You do it because you're inwardly convinced you're a loser. Be gentle with yourself.
