why is a.m. called a.m., and p.m. called p.m. Is it an abbvreviation for something? or is there no reason?

is there a reason for it? references please with where you found your information.

I am referring to the time of the day such as 7:00 am, or 12:00 pm.

a.m. = ante meridiem
p.m. = post meridiem

A.M. stands for Ante Meridiem and it's latin for "before mid-day".
P.M. stands for Post Meridiem and it's also latin: "after mid-day".
