I know that China had a huge influence in Southeast Asia for a long time, but I want to know if they ever actually ruled over my homeland (Cambodia) directly as a part of their empire.

No. Cambodia was ruled by Thai and Vietnam before the French came. Mostly it was ruled by Thai, sometimes by Vietnam, and it was ruled by Japan in WWII. The Khmer Empire was actually close to China and India but was never ruled by any of them.

I don't think China actually ruled over Cambodia, but I think that Cambodia was one of the tributary nations to China (there were 5).
