i tried everyones sugesstion and still nothing, the only thing i could ponder is that its grounding out... do you think it would be just so much simpler to convert from point to electonic?

wire comes from starter to coil out of coil to distributor check for power at these points. also make sure nothing inside the distibutor is grounding out. run a wire from batt. to the coil and check for spark.

Use a 12 Volt test light-test or a dvom-should have 12 v @ the + side of the coil-use a business card 2 get a close setting on the points-set on highest point of the lobe on the distributor-other side of coil should pulsate when u are cranking the engine over IF U have the points close.Put a coil wire in the coil & crank over & u should have spark when its close 2 the block.

take the distributor cap off and turn the ignition on. take a small flat screw driver and stick it in the points where they open and close see if there is any spark. if it does then try setting your points. and no you cannot change something that old to electronic ignition.

If its possible to convert to electronic ignition, do it! No points to mess with, no gapping points, setting dwell, more powerful spark, never wears out or needs adjustment.

Have you made sure the coil is getting 12 volts? It may have a bad ballast resistor or some wiring issues.

then you didnt set the point properly. you need to find the correct gap for the point and set it when it comes in contact with the rotor. your best bet is to find someone close that has set points(i know its only one assembly but its called "points")before.
