It isn't just people from Kentucky. In fact, I hear less about Kentucky than I do about people from West Virgina, the Carolinas, and most of the deep south. The problem isn't that southerners are stupid. The problem is that Yankees are RUDE. Statistically, IQ averages have nothing to do with geography, and while most northern states do have better public education, health care, and social programs, I think its safe to say that there aren't many southerners who would EVER want to live in a place as filthy, dangerous, and downright unpleasant as New York City, Chicago, Detroit, or Los Angeles.

Because those are the only people that the media will show on televison when doing stories on Kentucky. That is also the portrayal that is used in movies, television programs so that is what people think of. Having been in kentucky several times I know better, but most people are just too willing to believe those protrayals and to ask any further questions. I live in california and have seen more people that fit the description you gave than anywhere else I've been.

Oh, I thought that was West Virginia, I never heard that about Kentucky. I have a very dear friend going to college down there now. Well, i guess you learn something new everyday. Stereotypes are just that, nothing to get upset about, consider the source.

It's not just Kentucky. Try Georgia and Arkansas. The reason for this is these are Southern states, and ignorant folks elsewhere equate Southern accents, Southern anything, with lower intelligence.
Never mind the Yankee cabbies yelling "fuggeddaboudit" and "youse guys do dis." People attack Southern folks unfairly just because we have pride in who we are and keep to tradition, and speak in a southern drawl. They call us dumb rednecks, but it is they who are the less intelligent beings.
Lack of education appears in all states, in all societies, as does inbreeding. We just happen to be targets for those who are quite possibly trying to hide their own shortcomings.
