I have owned various models including Toro and many that use a Briggs and Stratten engine. I have found that Sears self-propelled with a 6.75hp engine does a very good job and requires little maintenance. Just make sure you change the oil and air filter (or clean it) once a year and change the plug if it does not start on the second pull. Mine is 3 years old, has the original plug and starts on the first pull.

I have a hand-powered mower and they're the best for a small garden. They are also the cheapest at around £30 new, and come with a 10 year guarantee, unlike the electrics which only have 3 year guarantee.

It cuts the grass by you pushing it along so some effort involved but no more than a supermarket trolly. It tones the chest and arm muscles nicely and you're done in 20 minutes - quicker than a trip to the gym. The noise isn't so intrusive as a flymo type, and it picks the cuttings up as you go.

Because it uses no energy - only your own- it is as green as a bicycle. Mine has received no maintenance in 8 years.

A petrol mower is the best - no electric cables round your feet, make sure you get one with power drive, a little bit more expensive but makes mowing effortless. Make sure its got a grass collector too, and make sure you have it serviced once a year. Weve had two Mountfield makes in our time, they lasted about ten years each.

I have an old Lawn Boy that works like a charm. I have the mulcher on so don't have to deal with cuttings. It is self-propelled, so I just have to aim it and follow along.

Poulan is a well-known brand, although my dad prefers his Craftsman brand mower from Sears. Whatever you do, just make sure you get one that is SELF-PROPELLED, especially if you have a large lawn or want a heavy mower.
