There are two types of memory - physical memory (hard disk, CD, etc.) and ram. Think of a filing cabinet (physical memory) and a chalk board (ram).

Randomly deleting programs in the Add/Remove Program section will take care of the physical memory but is generally a bad idea since you you might remove important programs like virus protection. If you need to free up this type of memory, download CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and run the program. This program will delete temporary files, dump files, etc. that you generally will not miss.

If it is RAM you need to free up, try the following:
1. Start Button
2. Run
3. Inside the "Open" box, type MSCONFIG and press the Enter key. Click the Startup tab.
4. This is important: jot down the name of everything with a check mark beside it. Try to identify what each program does and if you don't need it, uncheck it. Remember this doesn't erase the program from your hard disk, but simply tells it not to automatically start each time you turn on the computer.
5. Exit MSCONFIG and restart the computer.
