Sounds like you might be talking about a Tomato Horn Worm they are fairly large light green in color and about 1/2 inch in diameter maybe 2 inches or more long. I have them on occasion in my garden, they can really consume a tomato vine down to nothing if you don't get him. They are harmless but look hideous.

It's not a worm. It's a type of Caterpillar. Caterpillars turn into moths and butterflys.

sounds like a tabacco horn worm to me. I grew this in 9th grade for science class. They are about a half inch thick-1 inch. Hope you find your answer!
