You should go to an established, family owned nursery in that area. You can get help and good advise about planting. Also check out the folks at the County Farm Extension office.
You can plant sedum, which is a beautiful , leafy bush-like plant that crowns red in the fall.
Also late-season pansies and begonias, and roses---make sure they are cold-weather variety, as it can get down to frost level in Richmond.
I am not sure about this but hydrangas are also hardy, but they take forever to bloom

I'm not sure what you are looking for, something to bloom now or in the spring? You can plant spring bulbs in the fall, also Mums are a great fall plant, and Pansies do well in fall here in Richmond, too. Hope this is helpful!! Where in Richmond do you live?
