The 15x6 is metal. I was unable to find any sort of filter at the store that would fit into it. Is this an intake or is it for heating?

I have a seperate large opening where a large filter fits....

Sounds as though the l2x6 are supply registers (Air flow is into the room). The 15x6 are probably return air grills (air is drawn into these cold-air returns). Get one of those long lighters for BBQ grills and put the flame by the l5x6 grills. Air (and the flame) should be drawn into the grill. These l5x6 grills are probably not equipped to handle an air filter. That separate large opening you refer to is probably the main air filter. Measure it and buy the appropriately-sized filter. Good luck.

It's called a return vent. I have one in every room also but my filter is on the unit in the attic. As long as you have a filter somewhere, you should be okay.

Those larger vents are for humidity control!!! The moisture is vented up and into the attic "not so good" or out the house thru soffits or by a fan! they do not need filters!!

yes there return air vents. you dont need to filter the air there if there is a filter on the unit. I really dont recommend you hold a lighter to them though, they usually have a little dust and lint stuck to em, and well, lint burns......
