The images are called stereograms. The most famous creator of them is Magic Eye, Inc. Check their website below. They have directions on how to see in 3D, and also have a contest every ten weeks in which someone wins a free Magic Eye product.

Are you talking about the pictures you have to put face up to the picture then pull away to see the hidden image.
if so then it's a hidden picture books, if it's not then it might be a kaleidoscope.
