Fear is what keeps us alive. The fight or flight response (what happens when you get scared) is the basic survival response of all cognitive animals. When you are threatened, you need to react to stay alive, so we (meaning animals) have developed fear which propels us to either fight the threat or to flee from it.

Fear is a mechanism to keep us safe. If you saw a grizzly bear coming at you you would probably feel fear and get the heck out of the way! Problems occur when our fears become irrational and prevent us from doing certain activities. For example, some people fear flying in airplanes thus they can't travel to some places very well. Some people trying to help others say to do the thing you fear or there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Meaning--do not allow fear to obstruct your goals and activities to the point of lowering your quality of life.

People mostly fear the unknown. But, sometimes if the known is terrible enough, it can also cause fear.

so we can guard ourselves. as much as we all try not to be, we are all pretty emotion based. feeling fear is just our physical bodies way of telling us that we need to take another look at the situatuion.

because the mind grasps at the 'I, me and mine' as being truly existent we cherish that 'I, me and mine' above everything and everybody else. we think we are the most important being in our universe and that our wishes, for ourself, are the most important. this self obsession leads to trying to preserve this puny life-form; even though we (half) know that because we have been born, necessarily we have to die. since we have always cherished ourselves, above others, we cannot bear even the slightest situation that threatens our view of the 'I' being real and solid. we fear everything that doesn't fit in with our mind-plan because the ego fears losing control.
