well if i rememer correctly, hester prynn had had a relationship with the priest guy, but since he can't get married, they kept it a secret, and she was branded w/ the letter A on her chest to let everyone know she was a "tramp"...having a baby out of wedlock. (not married).

everyone looked at her daughter like a freak, and treated hester badly... later on the priest did something, i think he may have told the people or something, i can't recall..

try cliffs notes.. :) or spark notes

The majority of Hawthorne’s work takes America’s Puritan past as its subject, but The Scarlet Letter uses the material to greatest effect. The Puritans were a group of religious reformers who arrived in Massachusetts in the 1630s under the leadership of John Winthrop (whose death is recounted in the novel). The religious sect was known for its intolerance of dissenting ideas and lifestyles. In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses the repressive, authoritarian Puritan society as an analogue for humankind in general. The Puritan setting also enables him to portray the human soul under extreme -pressures. Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, while unquestionably part of the Puritan society in which they live, also reflect universal experiences. Hawthorne speaks specifically to American issues, but he circumvents the aesthetic and thematic limitations that might accompany such a focus. His universality and his dramatic flair have ensured his place in the literary canon.

I am reading it now for C.P. English, we haven't finished it yet but basically Hester Prynne commited adultery. Her husband had not come over to Boston yet. Hester went ahead of him and commited adultery. She then had a baby girl and won't tell who the father is. Her husband shows up the day she is on the scaffold for her punishment, how ironic. Sorry that is as far as we have got. But the father is some priest and the baby is basically not liked because of how she was conceived.

this is not elementary to % through fact this is notably much equivalent... Hester can by no potential demonstrate Pearl's genuine father The Reverend Dimsdale can by no potential demonstrate that he fell in love with Hester and is responsible for Pearl's existence. And what approximately Pearl? In that factor, she replace into kept away from through fact of her doubtful parentage. do no longer you think of SHE suffered through fact of her mum and dad' sufferings?

A woman committed adultery (which is illegal).
Once she was caught/discovered, she was forced to wear a Scarlet (red) letter "A" on her chest, so everybody knew she broke the law.
