Not true in the least!!! The story was "inspired"by a real killer named Ed Gein, who did make things out of the skin of dead people, but He did NOT use a chainsaw. Most of the bodies were already dead ,that he dug up in the local grave yard. He was suspected in the deaths of 2 local women. The idea for the chainsaw came to the director Toby Hooper when in was in a long line at a hardward store and he saw a chainsaw on a display and he thought to himself " I bet if I fired up that chainsaw , I could clear this store right out and I could move to the front of the line!". He said that a killer with a chainsaw would scare most anybody and thus The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was born!

No. The film, like the films Psycho, Deranged and The Silence of the Lambs, was loosely inspired by Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. Although the film's opening would have one believe that the events are factual, it is merely a scare tactic, called the false document technique, to frighten the audience.

Director Tobe Hooper claims to have got the idea for the film while standing in the hardware section of a crowded store. While thinking of a way to get out through the crowd, he spotted the chainsaws.

The Snopes website (debunking or validating urban legends) says that it is "sort of" true. Like the other answerer above, the website says the story is inspired in part by the life of Ed Gein, "a Wisconsin farmer who robbed graves (his own mother's supposedly among them), allegedly engaged in necrophilia and cannibalism, and murdered at least two women in the 1950s (one of whose corpses was found hanging naked — decapitated and disembowelled — in Gein's residence)."

no, it is not based on a true story. that is a hoax pulled by the producers the make more money. most of the inspiration came from the life of ed gein, who was real and is my hero.
dont believe those that say it was all a true story, they have been fooled by the haox. it is common knowledge that that movie as well as the movie "psycho" were inspired by ed gein's life.
