My paternal grampa is a recovering alcoholic, my biological mother is an avid alcoholic. She jokes that she is not an alcoholic cause she can stop drinking anytime she wants...yeah, right Laura.
I do have issues, no one knows this better than me:) Well.... me and the people who read my posts... lol
But I am NOT an alcoholic (and I have a drink about once every two months or so)
Having alcoholism as a hereditary family disease obviously makes you have to watch your habits better than someone else, but ultimately the decision is yours to make. You either lose yourself in the bottle...or actively control yourself where you know you're vulnerable.
It's like a man saying that he has no choice when he rapes women cause his father did it too. They are looking for the easy way out. It's easier to blame it on your genes than to say i'm just not strong enough.
Genes may be able to tell you what you are more likely to do than others but they don't say what you WILL do:)
It is really not that hard to do. First you need to be sure you are not surrounding yourself with people who are drinkers or you are setting yourself up for failure from the start. If you are not surrounded by drinking, it will be harder to get hooked on it. You can email me anytime, there's a link on my profile:) Good Luck:)

I'm kind of in the same situation as you. I have had many family members including my biological Father die from alcohol abuse. With God's help and your own determination you don't have to be in bondage of that fear.
I use to drink but don't anymore because of religious beliefs and the fact that I want to be an example to others and my children. But when I did drink I followed some basic rules. Never drink with the goal of getting drunk. Never drink because you think it makes you a better person when you do (usually the opposite is true). Never drink when your depressed or drink to get away from your problems. Most importantly know when to stop drinking and never drive drunk.

You should be worried about it. Alcoholism runs in my family (my father, his brother, some of his relatives; my mother's uncle, grandfather, a couple of her relatives)...if there's a gene for alcholism, it's in my family. The probablitiy that I, or my brother or my sister carries it is a high one.
We have all decided not to drink at all ever. As a child of alcoholics, you should know what you're risking. We do, and we've decided that it simply is not worth the risk.

this is one of the most predominant characteristics of alcoholism.although you may think you can do it from sheer willpower,it will get you, simply because it is in your genes.i would not take that chance.i have extensive exposure to alcoholics and can tell for a fact that most of them had an alcoholic in the family somewhere.denial is not a river in Egypt.we say it represents this phrase:don't even no(know) i am lying!!d-e-n-i-a-l.trust me when i say that i would not wish this disease on my worse enemy.so give yourself a chance in life and do not use any alcohol what so ever.when you are around it just fake it,until you make it.i will go to a wedding or a party and sip water, while others may be getting drunk,no problem.please just say no thanks i am not drinking today.PEACE AND GOD BE WITH YOU ALWAYS!!!

Sometimes it is hereditary , but not always . My ex husband and I are both alcoholics {I am 5 yrs. sober he still drinks } We have 2 children a girl and a boy , neither one of them have a problem with drinking ! So relax sweetie and just live your life , but I suggest you don't push your luck by drinking very often .
Good and God Bless !

Not neccessarily, my dad was an alcoholic and my brother had a drinking problem, but I hardly drink at all. Do you drink a lot now? You should have a pretty good idea of your future by your habits now.

That is a mental disease called addiction. Addiction doesn't care who it kills. Addiction is when the brain and neurological system becomes dependent on a substance to alter itself to be able to cope with mentally strenuous situations.
