He saw himself sacrificing his son in a dream. He asked his son about it. His son said that if that is what Allah wants then he should do it. Abraham was about to kill his son with a knife when an animal was substituted instead.

he had a prophetic dream that led to the "almost" sacrifice of his son ishmael, but an angel stopped him. the test was to prove to humanity that human sacrifices were inhumane and that animal sacrifices are better, so that's why we now have big feasts and feed the hungry for religious purposes.
