I think it can be traced back to a very long time ago when women were expected to have morals and to keep themselves chaste and pure for their intended spouse. In most societies, a man is expected to go out and sow his wild oats while a young lady is viewed as "loose" if she does the same. So, it all boils down to how liberated a woman is (or thinks she is) that determines how she carries herself.

Right. The main reason that it mattered was that guy are a bit more sensitive about that sort of thing than women. It used to matter more because the male libido is a fragile thing and guys don't necessarily have the capacity of being intimate while thinking about whether the girl is comparing them to soneone else. Most guys ahve to feel like when they are with a woman that she forgets everyone else she was with before, otherwise she isn't really over them and may go back at some point. Or if they are not enough like someone that she will leave them for somone that is.
But that's just one mans opinion.

I'm not a guy, but I want an honest answer from any guy that I'm considering sleeping with. It's important in deciding on his character. If he can't remember or says "plenty", why would I think that I would be special? There's a reason (other than risk of pregnancy and STDs) that I don't go around sleeping with lots of guys and it's because I want the guy I'm with to know that I value myself.
So as for your questions, why did it used to matter? Well because back in the day, sleeping around was not as tolerated. Women had much more respect for their bodies. Men didn't want to go to the bar and be sitting beside some guy who used to bang his wife. Those guys may or may not have been virgins, again back in the day, it was more tolerable for a man to have had other partners, just like it was more tolerable for a man to cheat!

Sexual transmitted diseases is the most important reason to discuss sexual history. It's also nice to know a persons experience, some men prefer a woman with experience (that are clean). You don't want some to just lay there. And a woman with experience knows what she wants and that always makes for better sex.

Years ago many people married very young and started a family right way. The risk of STDs was very low since they had been each others first. Now marriage is attacked and frowned upon leading to promiscuity. Men and women, they do not want something used and broken in. That is the job of newlyweds; to brake each other in.

1) To ensure they don't receive and STD
2) One's sexual history can actually a statement of loyalty or the lack thereof. Just like some guys aren't trustworthy, some girls are the same. If a woman has a history of flirting with guys, leading them on, then leaving, a man would want to know.

Paternity assured. Reading some of the answers to this question just validates the 15 point mean variance between the IQ's of scientists and social scientist. People; you need to include in any analysis of human behavior the evolutionary causation that gives rise to the proximate cause. Those causes can not be as diametrically opposed as some of the answers here would suggest.

Okay gurl I'm with you on this one. It aint fair that a guy can go out there and get his groove on all he want and have the nerve to ask you about your sexuAL history. you know why....because those guys are still livin from the stone ages. They think a women is suppose to be cooking their dinner, washing thier clothes and waiting home for them. These guys r just hopin that this gurl they are with will be the closed legg shy gurl they want. I don't know why, cause that gurl will be nothing but a smothering bugga boo. It's not fair we can't get ours as well. I'm tired of waiting around for a man.

They are afraid of being infected with the Aids virus.or any of the sexually transmitted diseases. This is a relevant issue to be concerned with, in today's modern world of free sex. And then, there's the double standard. Man expects the woman to have a short list but they themselves have a long list of conquests.

Why?
Because it was considered a virtue to have a virgin as a spouse; made her more desirable meaning her being "cleansed" & pure of all evil. Foolish? Well, it was considered a high commodity (virginity) then!
Of course in today's world, with the existence of countless diseases that're life threatening, it's a health issue, definitely.
