She's not that sexy, she can't really dance, she can't really sing that well, and she doesn't really come across as a very nice person (I know you shouldn't really judge a person as they appear on tv, but you know what I mean). She has a couple of catchy tunes and that's about it.

So why?????

Edit : I don't HATE her, her overwhelming success just seems a bit odd. And if it's all in the marketing, how come, say, Tiffany didn't last for 20 years?

Because she's business *smart*. She knows what she wants & she has enough talent to go after it with drive. She show-cases herself with re-inventions of her persona as the need arises & she has a lot of ambition and drive.

In other words, she knows how to market herself. She knows how to advertise, and she's driven by goals...often using controversial images to help boost her skills to achieve 'success'.

And yes. I like Madonna, even against my will. lol

I hear it is becasue she is a very tough businesswoman and will never accept a second-rate performance from either herself or anyone else involved. She's may not be brilliant at any one facet of her art but she is consistent. A Grand Prix driver who never comes first can still win the championship if they always get in the top 5. It's the same with Madonna, she works really hard and expects the same of her staff. It is the music "business" after all.

When she broke into the business, she was able to attract a core audience that has been extremely large and loyal. While she may not have the best of anything...she does have the total package and is a great entertainer.

The fact that she's been able to stay at or near the top of her profession for over 20 years speaks volumes.

marketing....look at the Olsen twins, Brittany Spears etc. It's all in the marketing.
RE edit...Tiffany didn't last because she didn't constantly come up with new ways to revamp her image. No matter how old Madonna gets (and she's pretty old) she updates her image.

If you don not like Madonna music the only reason that I can find is that corporate media has done very well the homework (from Rolling Stone to Billboard).

Because she did stupid things that no one used to do on her times, I mean, she's not a great singer, she's just famous. Like for example, she used to masturbate on the stage. No one used to do that on the 80s, normal singers still doesn't do it, but she was so... diferent that people started loving her, young womans wanted 2 b as open as her about many things, like her sexuality, and all that cr@p.

When u r controvertial u win fame, and she really was...

Her music's very OK and most people think it's very OK. She was OK to look at and most people thought so. She raised eyebrows in 80s etc with her views, opinions and attitudes and, I think, represented a lot of changed attitudes about, and from, women. Since then she has kept herself musically fresh and constantly in the news.

Just as her career was careering off the tracks she decided to get her muff out and flash the world as she was going by in her book Sex. The rest as they say is history!

Pretty much a good agent, lots of P/R and a lot of versatility. And I agree with your statements whole heartedly.
