I've made lots of these. If I were you i'd make a pumpkin
1. You blow up a big balloon
2. Mix up a huge bowl of half flower and half water
3. Gather up a lot of newspaper, enough to coat the balloon 6 x
Paste the flour glue all over the outside of the balloon and then start covering the balloon in the newspaper. After each layer of newspaper add more flour glue. Set this out to dry over night. The next day the pumpkin or whatever you want to make it will be ready for decorating and when your ready to insert the candy just cut a hole in the top where you tied the balloon . Have fun, kids really love to help with this project too.

I guess it depends on what shape you are going for...but if you want to make it easy blow up a very large balloon.
Make paper mache paste
Mix water and flour until you get the
consistancy of creamer. (not the color...just the consistancy)
Cut lots of news paper in long strips.
Put the paste in something like a paint tray or a cookie sheet. Then dip the newspaper strips in the "glue" until they are fully saturated. Then cover your balloon with a couple layers of the news paper/glue strips.
Now you have to let it dry over night. When it is dry tape a ribbon in a handle shape on the meche' to make a place for you to hang it when it is done. Repeat meche' process 3 or 4 times, until you get a sturdy orb...(see it does take a few days)
When it is dry the last time cut a flap in the top of your balloon shaped pinata. Make sure that pops the balloon.
You can either paint it to look like a pumpkin or an alien head or a scull... something round from Halloween. Then decorate it with glitter and streamers. The flap is for putting the candy inside. You have your handle for hanging!
Have fun!

It's so much easier and cheaper to just buy one!
Ususally, you blow up a ballon, and cover with papier mache (strips of newspaper soaked in liquid starch or flour/water paste)
When dry, pop and remove the balloon.
Make legs, arms, whatever with paper towel tubes and tape them on (cut the openings with downwards slits to make a flat surface to tape...like a flower)
Then, take colored tissue paper and cut in 2" squares, wrap paper around the end of a pencil, dab in glue and stick to the pinata until covered - or fold tissue lengthwise into 1/4s and cut slits on the folded edge to about 1/2 inch from the other end. Then, you open up the paper, accordion fold it so the little slits pop up, and glue over large area.
Be sure to use srtong wire on top to secure a place for the rope.

Buy a large balloon, After blowing it up, use strips of newpaper, then colored tissue , dipped in liquid starch (paper mache), to design your pinata shape. While doing the newspaper strips, this is the time to add legs, ears, etc and the the strips dipped in starch will keep them permanately in place. Alloow to dry. Cut small area underneath and add candy & toys, Use another few pieces og tissue dipped in starch to cover opening and let dry, Usually it should be easy to insert a hook or something so the rope has something to attatch to.

I DID THIS ONCE! XD
1. buy a balloon..(funny shaped, etc. the CHEAP KINDS..not da ones with ariel and spiderman on them) and blow it up...inflate it
2. make this glue subtance: mix water and glue together, so that its not thick, but not too watery. use a paintbrush to mix the mixture..keep the paintbrush, cause you'll need it to apply da glue mixture!
3. rip up newspapers, magazines, etc. and using da glue mixture, glue the ripped up pieces to the balloon (paper mache!) and let it dry. but leave a tiny space (so when it drys up, u can put candy into it!) make 2-4 layerss.
4. when its dry, pop the balloon (in the tiny space u left untouched) and make sure the knot of da balloon(at the bottom of da balloon, wherer you tied it to stop air from coming out...) is visible. decorate the outside with tissue paper, cones, plates, etc.
5. fill it in with candy, and using tape (or a sticker, paper, etc.) to close up the hole. hang up the pinata from the knot of da ballloon
6. you're done!
^^^note..tis was done before..by me! i made a pinata using da steps above...it was for my dogs birthday and we hit it and we had put dog treats in it!

Get cardboard and tape together to form a shape (but leave a hole to cover later). Wrap in some white paper (that thin tissue kind preferably). Use elmers (or similar) glue to hold paper on. Fill with candy, close hole with cardboard/paper. Let the glue and paper dry and paint if you want.

round ones you can make with a balloon and paper mache and then when it dries you pop the balloon. Traditional pinates are made with cardboard frames and tissue paper. But trust me - spend the 20 bucks, save yourself the agony and buy one at a party store!
