It recharged by plugging it into the computer. I turned my computer off and forgot to unplug it. Did I fry it by leaving it plugged in? Could it keep charging even if the computer is off?

If you left the mp3 player connected to the computer and you turned it off you couldn't have possibly fried it.
Does you mp3 player have a removable battery? try to remove it and install it again.
Does your mp3 player come with firmware? try reinstalling that as well.
When you turned off the computer I assume your mp3 player was in charge mode, however there is the possibility that it reverted to play mode after-wards and therefore all the juice that you put into it was consumed. ( i think this is unlikely though, as most mp3 players turn off if you cut off the power while in charge mode)
There is the possibility of a power surge that happened right before you turned off your computer.
If you turned your computer off, or even if you left it in hibernation mode, there is no way your mp3 player can keep charging.
I hope one of these suggestions helps.

Using your computer to charge an MP3 player is slow. Try to find a power cable for it and see if you can charge it. If not then you can take it to the store where you got it and have them take a look at it as long as you're under warranty. Doesn't sound like you fried it because your computer still works, right? Try to plug it in to another computer also.
