Surrealist Salvador Dali was incredibly talented, wildly imaginative, megalomaniacal and -- totally nutz!
He described himself as the savior of "Painting from the nihilism of modern art" and considered himself "the most famous painter in the world".
He also said, "The fact that I myself at the moment of painting do not know the significance of my pictures does not mean that these pictures are without meaning; on the contrary, their meaning is so profound, complex, coherent and spontaneous that it eludes the simple analysis of logical intuition."
His sculpture Venus de Milo with Drawers was created in 1936 in a frenzy of creativity spurred by the descent of Franco's Spain into Civil War and the assassination of the writer and longtime friend Federico Garcia Lorca. Of it Dali said, "Freud discovered the world of the subconscious on the tumid surfaces of ancient bodies, and Dali cut drawers into it."
Freud thought just about everything had a sexual connotation. And, I suspect, not to be one-upped, Dali was going deeper than Freud into the dark recesses of the goddess of love.
