you change a mixed number into a fraction by multiplying the bottom number (denominator) and the whole number, then add the top number(numerator) to that and put it over the old bottom number. Like 4 1/2. You multiply 2 and 4 to get 8 and add 1 so the answer is 9/5. If you divide 5 into 9. You get 4.5, which means 4 1/2

To change a mixed number into an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add it to the numerator of the fractional part.
Examples:
2 3/4 = ((2 × 4) + 3)/4 =11/4

you see 4 1/2 is 2 x 4 =8 +1 = 9
9/2=4.5
you times the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator to get the inproper fraction. from the inproper fraction if you divide the top from the bottom (example: 9/2=4.5) you get the answer. How many times does 2 go into 9? 4 ; so what's left over 1, which makes it 1/2. do u understand?

you changed a mixed number to a decimal. since 1/2=.5, you are correct. To change 4 1/2 into a fraction (technically an improper fraction since the numerator will be larger than the denominator)
rewrite as 4/1 +1/2
find the lowesr common denominator (2)
8/2+1/2
9/2 is the answer.

easy: 1- multiply the dinomenator with the side number
2- add the numerator
3- use the same dinomenator
ex: 4 1/2
1- 2x4 = 8
2- 8+1=9
3- fraction = 9/2

to get the numerator, multiply the denominator and the whole number and add the sum to the numerator. ex. 2*4+1=9/2
P.S. the denominator always stays the same

all the guys who have answered r rite..but heres a much simpler approach
41/2 is simply 4 and a half..meaning 4 and another half or 4 'plus' half which is 4.5
another example//say 71/5..is simple 7+ 1/5 which is 0.2 so this is 7.2
