What are those "abandoned" cars in the road, with numbers painted on it?

I'm not from America...I always see them and wonder where is its destiny.

they are cars that have broke down or were left for some reason the marks tell the tow truck driver that he can tow it it is then taken to the tow yard the owner is called if he cant get it out it is sold or crushed

if they got marks on them that are numbers that don't look like graffiti then they're marked for pickup to be taken to the crusher.
