It's highly unlikely the bread went into your respiratory system, if it had gone into your trachea (windpipe) or the bronchi that branch out from there to each lung, you'd still be coughing, as the bread would irritate the tissue and your body would respond to get it out. Also, lungs aren't just hollow sacs, they have a lot of surface area inside to allow gas transfer, and are built a bit like a sponge.
The bread probably got lodged in your esophagus (that's the tube from your throat to your stomach), which can feel like you've got something stuck in your chest. It's nothing to worry about, just have a drink to wash the bread down if it's still stuck, and it will work its way down on its own eventually anyway through muscle movements.
EDIT: If you had a lot of coughing but didn't cough the bread up or swallow it, then it is quite possible you aspired it. Go see a doctor first thing in the morning. This is not an immediate emergency, but it does require medical attention. Your doctor will start by listening for abnormalities in your breathing, and may order other tests from there. I have my doubts about whether bread would show up on a chest x-ray, but that's for your doctor to decide and certainly there are other tests that can be done.
Something as serious as pneumonia would take a few days to set in and hurt a young, healthy person. But do get it checked out today so that you can be treated properly.

I inhaled a peanut about 6 months ago .I felt fine for about a day or two ,but then I began to get a bad cough.I eventually coughed it out the night before my doctors appointment but the next day the doctor did many tests to make sure nothing was left in my lungs.I did have a raspy breathing episode for a couple of days b4 I coughed it out and it worried the doctor. You can actually die from this. The bread can actually dislodge from where it's stuck now and block your air ways causing aspiration. You won't be able to breathe. The doctor said that if this ever happened again for me to go straight to the emergency room. You may feel OK now but this can go really bad. Please go see a doctor ASAP.I would hate it if something happened to you and as a runner you need your lungs to be in tip top shape.Good luck.

If you actually got food in your lungs, this is called aspiration. It can be a very dangerous situation, and at the very least can damage your delicate lung tissue. Also, it can put you at risk for pneumonia.
If you really believe the food went into your lungs, you should probably see your doctor about it, and get an x-ray of your lungs. They'll be able to tell you if there is a foreign body present and if so, what to do about it.
Good luck!

If the bread "when into your lungs" you would coughing so hard right now that you would be busy typing questions. If it did manage to get all the way down your trachea and past your main stem bronchus and into smaller airways the next step is pneumonia.

Did u cough it back out? Yes, it is possible to swallow something and have it go into ur lngs. It's called aspiration. Some people don't ever know that it is happening to them. That is called silent aspiration. It can causr pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia. Most people who have something "go down the wrong pipe" r able to cough it out on their own and don't need any further medical attention unless it is something that occurs on a regular basis.

LOL! You can't be serious. If the bread went into your lung it would be very uncomfortable. Go the nearest ER, if not....then here's what you need to do. What you need to do is, eat light and healthy and work out, get enough sleep and take your vitamins. You should feel better on your Racing day.

What makes you think the bread went into your lungs and not your stomach? If it doesn't hurt when you breath I wouldn't worry about it and I am not even sure that is physically possible

You did not have the bread go into your lungs. If you truly aspirated it, you would be dying right now and not able to type.
The bread has gone down into your esophagus.
