Your chemist could not get them because the manufacturer "wyeth" has been having technical problems with licensing changes. All but the very low (and not commonly used) strengths are now available again in the UK.
Ask your regular pharmacist for confirmation of this.

In the United States they are still available. They were put on a silent moratorium because of the Women's Health Initiative study that showed that they showed in increase in Heart Disease, Breast Cancer. However there is recent data, specifically towards that of Premarin that it is safe to use, especially in that of 5 years, with a nominal increase in as stated above. But usually the benefits of bone density and psychological improvement outweighs those discrepancies.

If you were prescribed Premarin then your GP must think it's safe for you to take them. The chemist should have ordered them in for you if they couldn't get them on the day.
