Then why are muslim women allowed to wear their veils? You cannot see their faces therefore unable to identify them...

NO RACISM INTENDED !

2006-10-05 09:15:52 · 23 answers · asked by the thinker 3 in Society & Culture Cultures & Groups Other - Cultures & Groups

This is a serious point with no sarcasm intended or racism but...

If I was going to commit a crime it would be the perfect disguise/mask as you wouldn't get challanged !

You could hide countless weapons under the gowns, guns, explosives.

I really don't care if it's a religous garment - you are asked to remove hoods and helmets so you are identifiable for CCTV.

They are allowed to enter these premisis for want of a better phrase "fully disguised" and they remain totally anonymous to CCTV and security guards.

Do you not think this is asking for trouble?

I am not implying that muslim women are criminals in the slightest - the point I am making is thay they don't get challenged.

If you walked into a bank with a balaclava (or even a hood/helmet) on you would get stopped.

The perfect anonymous mask if you were going to commit a crime would be to dress in this attire as you wouldn't get challanged.

The reason I have posted this question today is due to Jack Straws comments as it is a current affair.

I have often asked this question for the last 10 or so years but I am afraid of being labelled a racist.

It seems if you challenge/question the belifes of others religons you are automatically labelled a racist or a bigot which I am not.

So please nobody call me a racist (which will prompt some clever person to do so now)

This is a legitimate question that I have often wondered about.

AGAIN NO RACISM INTENDED !

Misiu - just the answer I was waiting for:
are you implying that Muslim women are not allowed to fill their cars up with petrol therefore being required to pay for it?

Are you saying that Muslim women are not to be entrusted with monies in regards to banking?

I have in fact seem Muslim women dressed in their veils in both petrol stations and banks.

I think you are the one that requires "re-educating" because it seems that you need to wake up to the fact this is 2006 and Muslim women actually do carry out these day to day tasks !

Islamaphobe eh? I think you need to study society and culture more and open your eyes to what happens around the globe on a day to day basis.

Muslim women lead perfectly normal lives and they carry out normal day to day tasks.

I think you are the discrimative one for implying there are not entrusted to do so

Regimented - get real !

2006-10-05 09:42:29 · update #3

And another thing - is it not discrimative to allow one culture to live by one set of rules while the rest of the nation have to adhere to the laws that are in place.

Does it not discriminate against bikers that they have to remove thier safety helemts?

Does it not discriminate against people who want to wear a hooded top?

Is it not discrimitive to imply that all hood wearing people are thugs?

Angelstar I hope you read this - you obviously have not read or understood any part of my question.

I am asking why do Muslim women not have to remove their veils in places where security is paramount.

I am not asking why they wear them.

I know WHY they wear them - I just can't understand how men and women are asked to remove a crash helmet or hood when entering an establishment where security is paramount but Muslim women are not required to remove their veil.

Please read the question thoroughly before answering !

They are allowed to wear their veils because this country has not imposed any rule against them... Yet. Private shops and places could, if they wanted to, impose their own rules and stop them from wearing them...

You could argue that stopping them from wearing them would only fuel a lot of hatred for the places preventing them from wearing them and instead of simply removing them, those places would be targeted for protests... Or worse... So it might be better to just let them do it and avoid the complications and confrontations...

However, you could also argue your case, which I do agree with... People who conceal themselves willingly from CCTV and monitoring equipment pose a legitimate threat no matter who they are and why they are concealing themselves... If you can't be identified then you are free to do anything without fear of being caught and punished...

At the moment, as I said, they can wear them because private and public places have not banned them... If things carry on the way they are then I wouldn't be surprised if they did impose a ban... At that point I wouldn't be surprised either if it resulted in anti-western hatred and protests much like when the Muslim community reacted to the pope calling them agressive by burning down churches and murdering a nun...

If history has taught us anything it's that unstable countries and unstable religions need to be treated differently... If you tell them to do something then they will, invariably, reject it and start burning flags... If you leave them alone and try to get on with things then they get infuriated at being ignored... If you try to pay attention to their needs you can never do enough and, always, get accused of neglecting certain areas or groups...

Some of us take off our crash helmets and hoodies and don't walk around in gangs because we want an easy life and we have nothing to hide... Some of us put on the hoodies, form gangs, attack innocent people and go out of our way specifically to cause trouble...

Despite religious people believing that they believe in something truly divine and that what they are doing is for the greater good, religion and Religious dress is no different to what I have just described... A lot of people are now using religion as a shield, method of brain washing and recruitment and a very powerfull political weapon.

I would say "No racism intended" but these days racism is in the eye of the beholder... I intend to say what I say, if it's racist then let people say it's racist... I personally don't have a problem with teh colour of a persons skin, it's just attitudes towards me and my way of life which I have issues with...

In conclusion I say " Get the FULL veil off! Or does my opinion no longer matter in my own country..? "

It is a good question and not racist in any way. You have in the past year, in this country, had a grandmother being asked to remove her hat in a pub because, for security reasons, they weren't allowed as they obscured CCTV shots. The only answer would be to ban the veil in such circumstances where there were security reasons and in the case of a driver wearing a veil a companion would have to pay.
Having said that I would have thought that wearing one while driving would be unlawful in that you have restricted side vision, i.e. if you take a sight test they will actually measure when something becomes apparent on the left or right while you are looking forward.

The English language needs a new word. I am English, white and an atheist. I get angry with motorists if they display Sikh insignia on their cars and cannot help myself from being aggressive. Ditto if they display Islamic insignia. Ditto if they have a fish on the back of their car!! Yet whatever flags I see, Pakistani, Indian, English, don't bother me. Everyone should be proud of their country and their heritage, but religion has no place in this modern world.

I'm not racist, I'm religionist! And as I don't belong to any particular religion myself, I hate them all equally!

p.s In response to your actual question, spot on! This is still, almost unbelievably, a Christian country therefore all it's residents should abide by the current Christian laws.

p.p.s Islamic holy writings state that any follower should abide by the laws of the land they are visiting / living in. Where in Christian law does it state that you may kill innocents? No seven virgins for those fundamentalists!

Ours is not an area where you would be likely to see Muslims in any quantity, but I was in Tesco's last week and one was shopping with what I assume was her husband.
It gives me the creeps when all you see is someone dressed in black with only a pair of eyes. (not much good in an ID parade)
Jack Straw was right to bring this up, and well done you.
This is supposed to be great britain. A country I was once very proud of, but no longer. I see a gutless government, who would wet their knickers if it came to standing up for the English.
Gone is Christmas, gone is the Bible and gone will be the cross from around the news readers neck.
No I'm not racist just an old Englishman.

Your point only has some merit if you have seen veiled muslim women being served in banks and petrol stations. You didn't state that you have seen them, so I suspect that you haven't. If the women were that regimented, it is unlikely that they would be allowed to do the banking or to refuel the car.

Discrimination is not necessarily born out of prejudice, so regardless of your statement "NO RACISM INTENDED!", your question is discriminatory. Firstly, you are talking as though something that you have not even witnessed, did actually occur. Secondly, the discrimination inherent in the question relates to religion (i.e. Islamophobia). Since it is you that introduced the racsim element, I suspect that you are indeed racially prejudiced, as well as being an Islamophobe. But don't worry, there is a remedy: education.

What a brilliant question! I completely agree, as I'm sure do all shop workers and maybe even the government... but can you imagine the uproar if they tried to introduce it?? Half the time rules are only brought in to satisfy the public, and often never brought in when it's likely to offend the public! Don't worry that muslim's are actually as scary to me as hoody wearing youths at the moment, and probably more dangerous too.

Oh how right you are!!! It would appear these people are allowed to do ANYTHING!! And its sanctioned by our government and the law!! I am sick of the hypocritical double standards of the Muslim world. If we go to a Muslim country, we are expected to cover up. So why should we not expect the same here? They choose to come here,so they should respect our way of life. I say, its time to stop appeasing these fanatics.

Yep, you v'e got a good point. i have seen a genuine passort picture of a woman (could have been anyone) with face and head completely covered - with only a slit for the eyes, that you cannot see either.
One rule for everyone. Simple as that.

form of defeats the point would not it. no matter if or not that's the veils or a bandana or a stocking hat it obscures the face. i will appreciate a regulation even as it applies, in the technique the board to all and assorted regardless of race, custom or relegious conception. There comes a level the position you need to entice the line. someone can create a "new" relegion that enables finished body and facial armour, yet calls for all that's people to undergo finished hands, that's interior of their relegion to justify killing absolutely everyone that is going hostile to them with out evidence. that's what extreemists are. The further aside you draw the lines, the better extreem it receives. There are life like limits once you attempt to settle for all varieties of issues. do you elect life like limits or chaos? the in hardship-free words reason we were useful is a appreciate for limits. i do not care what you do at your position of abode or on your church, yet once you walk out your door, there are limits! you won't be able to bypass walking round bare and there are seashores and communities in which you could. you aren't to any extent further forbidden to, in hardship-free words constrained as to the position that's optimal. yet in case you walk right into a widely used nudist camp...you won't be able to bypass screaming about "your rights" and how you're "indignant" through it. don't love bare people, do not bypass to a nudist camp. ordinary. in case you elect Spanish signs and indications on your city, nice....then do not tell me i must talk Spanish in an English section. and do not deliver feelers out to "take over" my city. and do not scream racism even as people do not elect you or your custom there. people have rights too. regardless of in the journey that they are not a similar as yours.
