For example, I HATE spiders. If I see one, I shriek like a little girl and run away flailing. I know it's irrational but even after telling myself this throughout my entire life, it still doesn't matter! Where do you think these strange phobias come from?

Most fears are the product of association. You associate the thing you are afraid of with a bad experience or with a warning you have been given in the past. When you were a child you were repeatedly told "No" and "Bad" and you cried and now you subconciously remember those tears.

This irrational fears as you say is a defense mechanisim.
exmp. the first time a someone encountered a spider and got bitten or scared, he now knew not to get close to one and fear was stablished in his brain. however fear is not heretical, so your fear of spiders is probably do to society. society thinks of spider as evil and always out to get people, but in reality most spider bites are insidental and usually the person is at fult.

i think ur born with it. they just surface when u come across ur feared thing/animal. fears are just part of being human just like all other emotions. where does happiness comes from? no one really knows
