I do not believe there is any selling involved here. Pregnant mothers know it is not healthy for them or the baby. As far as child abuse, that is a bit extreme, in my opinion. Alot depends on the health and age of the mother. I did smoke 1-1 1/2 packs a day, UNTIL, I found out I was pregnant. From there, I tapered down (as it is an addiction), to 2 a day, if that. My ob said that was awesome. I had 2 boys both weighing over 9 lbs. They are now 5 and 9, WITHOUT reoccurring health problems.

I'm 27 and my mother smoked with me and my brother, we were lucky as we were not effected and were large babies. It was different in the 70's these days it's not acceptable because we know so much more about how it could harm your unborn baby. When I walk past a pregnant woman who is openly enjoying a *** I feel sad for the baby, and I feel angry that the Mother isn't ashamed. At least do it in private!!
No, we can't tell other people not to smoke, not my business, not my baby. But yes we do have a right to say it's wrong. If someone was puffing smoke near my children I'd move them away. I suppose it's the attitude that matters more, if a pregnant woman recognises it's harmful but needs the odd ciggy to survive then that's different to someone who couldn't care less so smokes 40 a day regardless of her unborn baby....

I am a smoker, however each time I was pregnant I gave it up the day I found out, and never smoked again until after they were born. I feel that while I am pregnant my body is not my own anymore, it is my unborn childs, and it is my responsibility to do nothing that I know could harm her. In that vein, I also did not ingest caffeine or diet soda, and I ate vegetarian, getting my protein from soy based products.
That said.....
I am pro choice all the way and believe that a woman has the right to do to herself what she chooses, I am saddened when a woman smokes during pregnancy, or drinks alcohol...I work with children who have fetal alcohol syndrome, i know the effects. But it is not my place to preach to them, only to lead by example...which is what every persons duty is, so quit acting holier than thou, and worry about your own life...i am sure it is not skeleton free.

You definately have strong views on this matter.
I agree that it can seriously affect the health of the unborn child. As far as these recent reports go regarding pregnant teenage girls smoking to produce smaller babies is downright stupid. You can still have a very long labour with a small baby.
It will be interesting to see the replies on here.

Ha, what an inviting way to ask pregnant smokers to tell their side of the story. Talk about crappy you think it is and how they shouldnt even be able to keep their kid, and then be like "...what do you think?"
ANYWAYS!, I smoked before I knew I was pregnant, but because I didnt know I was pregnant for such a long time, I was two and half months before I knew I was pregnant (so of course, i was still smoking). I quit immediately and all sorts of complications came into play. My doctor told me that quitting cold turkey like that was the worst thing that I could have done because it stresses the baby. He told me that as long as I wasnt chain smoking and i kept it less than four or five cigarettes a day, he would be fine.
He also said that (and i didnt just talk to one doctor cause i was skeptical) many doctors tell you not to smoke and say that it causes low birth weight when in all actuality its not the smoking that causes the low birth weight its the affect the cigarette has on you to not eat. Most people who smoke arent as hungry as usual and eat less. I, on the other hand, smoked but yet i ate everything.
I carried him full term, he was seven pounds 15 ounces (one ounce from eight pounds) and was, and still is, completely healthy.
Its worse when they are out of the womb to smoke around them, which is why my husband and I smoke outside and when we come back in, we use hand sanitizer and change our shirts before we pick him up. (we dont smoke a lot, so its not like we are going through our whole wardrobe in a day)
Oh and by the way, you were one of those people that i hated when i was pregnant. Giving the dirty looks or something when i had a cigarette. Mind your own business.

My husbands great niece was born with a severe heart problem and has had 6 operations in her 8 years since birth, she is ever so thin and tiny for her age, the doctors don't think she will live beyond her 16th birthday, all because her mother smoked heavily, drank too much and ate very little, I agree it is bad smoking whilst pregnant and drinking too, but for some its too late to tell them because they just won't listen.

Of course smoking while pregnant is bad--I guess the tobacco companies should have thought about that too when they utilize very sophisticated marketing techniques to encourage people to start smoking a substance that they not only know is addicting, but they manipulate the amount of nicotine in their product to keep people addicted. Smoking is an addiction--yes, it can be broken, but it is a much bigger than saying "those people are bad scum" as you state.

What gets me is women in England are smoking in hopes of giving birth to a smaller baby and have an easier time in labor. What about having a overall healthy baby?

The baby is not breathing anything but amniotic fluid when in the womb. I'm not disputing the fact that it affects the baby, however smoking a joint or a roll up, is nowhere near as bad as smoking real cigarettes. There are up to 30 times less chemicals in hand rolling baccy or weed, than there are in cigarette tobacco !
Also I totally agree that it's a completley selfish thing to do, but saying smokers shouldn't be allowed to keep thier children is a bit harsh, when you consider all the non smokers who abuse thier children, and all the smack heads who are allowed to keep babies. I think you should think about the way you word your questions in future. I'm a smoker and a first time mum, and I'm telling you I don't deserve to have my daughter taken off me for smoking !
I also bvelieve if you have smoked for as long as I have, how can the shock of no nicotene etc.... to your body be good, when incubating your baby, if you see what I mean ??
If you have the balls to ask the question, have the balls to get your facts right first, what ever your name is !!!!
