Sure, I've done that before. I have also bought colored T-shirts and tie-bleached them as well. Best results I would use straight liquid bleach. Don't dilute. Wear rubber gloves and do it in a WELL VENTALATED area. Outside might be good, or garage, but maybe not a bathroom or basement.
I would not tie your pants into knots. Denim is pretty heavy material so the best thing I would do is first use rubber bands to get the general idea, then tightly wrap the rubber banded area with yarn. You want the wound area to feel hard/stiff when you squeeze it. Repeat this process until you have the desired area covered. Put your pants into a bucket/pail of some sort and pour on the bleach. You don't really need a whole lot, just slosh the jeans around and thuroughly saturate them. Let sit for a minute, but not too long. You may notice I slight fade, but you won't really notice a huge differance until after they are washed. After the bleach bath rinse them thuroughly in water. Untie and thrown them into the washing machine seperatly or with other tie bleached jeans and wash them as you would normally wash jeans. Don't add any extra bleach to the washing machine. Goggles would not be a bad idea to protect your eyes when you given them the bleach bath. I wouldn't tie a T-shirt in a knot either, the results aren't that great. I've gotten neat effects by crumpling a shirt tightly in a nylon stocking. I have never had a problem with this, but nylon does have a tendancy to "react" with bleach in a very unfavorable manner. So don't use nylon yarn to tie up your jeans. I can't really think of much else to tell you. It's been a while since I have done this. One thing to consider is that the bleach greatly weakens the fabric where they have been bleached, so you will eventually notice holes where they were bleached long befoe the unbleached portion of the fabric wears out. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any help and let me know how things turned out. Oh, by the way, you also get a pretty neat effect shooting your jeans with a shotgun. Use shot between #6 to #12 and stand back a good distance, like 15-25 yards and put something over the zipper for protection. Have fun.

Tie Dye Bleach

All the answers I've read will just fade the denim. The real question would be how do you want the end result to look? Areas that are knotted or bound with cording will fade less than open areas. You may want to practice with a swatch of denim (from a fabric store) before committing your jeans to a permanent design.

Hello there: My guess would be to use the bleach like you would with original dye. However, be careful :) Hope this helps you.
