That is really a shame. I was a Peace Corps volunteer there in the 80 and thought it was great. Tunisians definitely treat you differently when you are living there and speak Arabic. I found them to be incredibly hospitable people... but I think you are right about the lame jokes!

I wonder where you went?! I am American and have been living in Tunisia for over 5 years and have had nothing but good experiences. And that goes for even before I could speak Arabic or French.
The people in Tunisia are very warm, hospitable and giving. They will give you the shirt off their back if they think you want it. As for the jokes, a lot gets lost in translation. The same is true if you tried to translate and english joke into another language.
By the way, I think you're exaggerating on saving 5 Euros. 5 Euros is equal to 8.5 Tunisian Dinars - that ALONE would get you from Tunis to where I live in Monastir (a 2 hour drive).

I LOVED it. I only had 4 days but I haven't been able to get over them. it was terrific, and most of the peope I met were embarressingly nice. I felt like I should do something in return but didn't know what. I can't wait to go back, I boarded the plane back with loads of spontaneous presents from total strangers. I was looking for an internet cafe to empty my camera memory so I asked a computer hardware store for directions. The man invited me in, did all the work himself on his own laptop, and gave them to me on a CD all for free!
I was walking around with my friends after closing hours on my last day, around a sort of monument area and all they had to do is ask the guard to let us in, and he did! Just because it was my last chance to see it. And mind you I was not talking Arabic all the time, sometimes I spoke English or French, it wasn't that different. Maybe the first 2 incidents happened to be bad for you so you just started seeing the empty half from there. But careful the next time you're having a rare very-bad-mood-day and a total stranger judges you accordingly!

Strange that, I found that in certain parts they were so lazy & wanted almost the shirt off your back for nothing, then again depending where you are, other parts were just fantastic maybe, you just had a bad apple, there are a few around in many countries, including our own.

There are bad people everywhere, but you shouldn't make your judgements based on their acts only. By having prejudice, you will harm yourself at the first place.
And this is a HUGE and HORRIBLE PREJUDICE!
