the human kind

The human kind, or the computer kind?

The human kind are hard to get rid of because they are so small they go right through most of the filters used in laboratories, and so it's difficult to catch them and study them. Also, they are not truly alive, the way bacteria are alive, once they are removed from their host (that's you). So studying them is very, very tricky.

The computer kind, the real problem is that most of us haven't a clue as to how viruses (virii, actually, but nobody seems to use that for the plural) are created and transmitted, so we suddenly have our computer acting funny, we don't necessarily think of a virus, don't necessarily know what to do if we did. And once it has caused a crash, you frequently need to start all over again by reinstalling your operating system and all that. Tends to take a professional to know what to do.

They are not truly " alive ', in the bacterial sense, so the myriad things we do to interfere with bacterial cell mechanisms do not work for viruses. Also, the rate of mutation in viruses is so high, that when you do find some thing to interfere with their simplistic mechanisms, they can mutate and evolve newer types of mechanisms.
