There are two answers here. The tree used to produce rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) produces latex that was used to manufacture rubber products (tires etc.). There is also a commonly cultivated species of fig (Ficus elastica) that is known as a "Rubber Tree". All Ficus species produce a sticky, milky-white latex and so they came to be called rubber trees, also, even though they are not used to produce a commercial product.

They are unrelated plants: Hevea is Euphorbiaceae (poinsettia family ... commonly has latex), Ficus is Moraceae. Other plants have latex also: Frangipani (Apocynaceae) is a good example.

The milky latex which oozes out of the tree plays a very vital role in the manufacture of Rubber.
