Aren't we all pretty much pretending to be someone we're not anyway?

Hate is a pretty strong word but I'd rather be myself although at times I'm not always relaxed enough to do that.
Sometimes I feel phony because I'm hiding behind a mask (which I hate doing) so I'll feel more comfortable with the crowd I'm in or whatever the situation may be.So I guess I'm being a bit of both.

The question as phrased is asking whether or not one can live a lie with another or others successfully? I do not believe this is possible except if the one living a lie is a sociopath, and in Clinical_Denial regarding his/her actual disposition.

The reason is that denial of oneself always generates resentment, even if one represses such resentment, it builds until one can no longer deny it, and it erupts in often quire harmful actions.... probably resulting in a hatred on the part of those being deceived. Now that is ironic.

Peace

I'd rather be myself and hope for the best. You can fool some people but you can never fool yourself and living a lie is like carrying a large weight through life. It doesn't mean that you can't change and try out different experiences though.

I would rather be hated for being myself, however, my true self is the type of guy who pretends to be someone I'm not. This inevitably leads to me getting loved, which makes me want to pretend to be the kind of guy who keeps it real.

Neither. No one wants to be hated for being themselves, though it does happen. Only the extremely needy, or insecure soul would pretend to be someone else in order to be loved.

Well at least if I was pretending I could always go back to being myself... I would never pretend to be someone I'm not, though..

I really wouldn't want to be hated for being myself. :[

I'd much rather be hated for being myself. First of all, hate and love are very similar emotions (apathy is the opposite of both). Second, read Nietzsche.

You only live once so you have to be true to yourself and be yourself. But, I wonder why being yourself brings out hatred in others? Being yourself does not give you license to deliberately hurt people. I'm not saying you are, but your question seems to say that. Be yourself but be kind to others. If you aren't, you will reap what you sew. Mean in. Mean out!
